King leads the pawn
Walk your pawn to the last rank with the king in front as a bodyguard.
Beginner · Pawn endgames · 2 steps. On Chess Castles, Chess Guru reads each step aloud in English, Hindi or Marathi while the moves play on the board, and you can practise any position against the engine.
Step 1
A pawn alone cannot reach the last rank: the enemy king would eat it. So your king walks in front of the pawn, like a bodyguard, and pushes the enemy king away. With your king on the 6th rank in front of the pawn, you always win.
Step 2
Moves: 1.Kf6 Kd7 2.e6+ Kd6 3.e7 Kd7 4.Kf7 Kc6 5.e8=Q+ Kd5 6.Qe3 Kd6 7.Qe4 Kc5
Watch the white king clear the way. The pawn walks up behind it and becomes a queen.
