When your child loses and cries: what to say
Tears after a loss are normal. Here is how to turn them into growth.
A child who cries after losing cares about the game. That is a good sign, not a problem. What you say in the next five minutes matters more than the game.
What helps
- First, feelings. "That was a tough one. It is OK to be upset." Do not rush to analyse.
- Wait. Review the game later, when the child is calm, ideally the next day.
- Ask, do not judge. "Which move do you wish you could play again?" beats "How did you miss that?"
- Notice effort. "You kept fighting even when you were behind" is something the child controls; the result is not.
What to avoid
- "You should have..." and comparing with other children.
- Promising a treat for winning. It makes every loss feel like a loss of love.
Strong players lose often. Even world champions lose many games a year. A child who learns to recover from a loss is learning something bigger than chess.
