Scholar’s mate: the 4-move trap every beginner meets
How the quickest checkmate works, and three easy ways to stop it.
You will see this in almost every beginner game. White plays e4, then the bishop to c4 and the queen to h5, and aims both at the f7 pawn, which only the king guards. Four moves later, it is checkmate.

How to stop it
- Do not play 3...Nf6??. It attacks the queen but does not guard f7, so Qxf7 is mate. Play 3...g6 to chase the queen away, or 3...Qe7 to guard f7.
- Do not bring your queen out too early. It becomes a target.
- Develop knights and bishops, castle, and look at what the opponent’s last move attacks.
And if you are White
It is a trap that works only against careless players. Against good defence, your queen gets chased and you lose time. Use it to learn the idea of attacking the weakest square, f7 or f2, then move on to real openings.
